What is FCL (Full Container Load)?

  • 1 min read

Definition

FCL (Full Container Load) is an ocean freight shipping method in which a single shipper uses an entire container for their cargo.

FCL is commonly used when shipment volume is large enough to justify exclusive use of a container.

Characteristics of FCL

With FCL shipping, cargo is not mixed with shipments from other companies.

This provides:

  • Better cargo control

  • Reduced handling risk

  • Improved transportation efficiency

Advantages of FCL

Reduced Cargo Damage Risk

Fewer handling points reduce the likelihood of cargo damage.

Faster Transit Times

No consolidation or deconsolidation processes are required.

Suitable for Large Shipments

FCL often becomes more cost-effective as shipment volume increases.

Disadvantages of FCL

Less Suitable for Small Shipments

Shippers pay for the entire container even if it is not fully utilized.

Higher Initial Cost

Smaller shipments may benefit more from LCL shipping.

FCL vs LCL

FCL

  • Exclusive container use

  • Best for large shipments

  • Faster processing

LCL

  • Shared container space

  • Suitable for smaller shipments

  • Requires cargo consolidation

FCL in Logistics Procurement

Shippers often compare FCL freight rates from multiple logistics providers as part of transportation sourcing and procurement projects.
