China-Europe Airfreight Rates Strengthen

Airfreight rates from China to Europe have strengthened as the market adjusts to the EU’s €3 customs duty on low-value parcels, introduced in July after the end of the de minimis exemption.

According to TAC Index data for the seven days to 24 August, China-Europe rates increased week on week, while rates to the US declined. Hong Kong-Europe rates also rose, with the BAI30 index up 2% week on week and 22.8% year on year. Rates from Taiwan to Europe and the US also increased, while Southeast Asian markets generally saw firmer Europe-bound rates. Globally, the Baltic Air Freight Index remained 21% above last year amid geopolitical tensions and high fuel costs.
